GREEN HYDROGEN

Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas derived from renewable energy sources rather than fossil fuels such as natural gas or oil.

Advantages of green hydrogen:

  • Sustainable,
  • 100% eco-friendly,
  • Efficient,
  • Storable,
  • Portable,
  • Can be used in different areas

The fact that our country has the second largest wind and solar energy production potential in Europe positions our lands as the country with the greatest potential for hydrogen production in the region.

We are represented in H2DER with our Biga H2 company.

Green hydrogen, which is one of the most important parts of the transition to zero emissions in the world, will play a key role in energy transportation and storage. We continue to work with all our strength to become one of the leading companies in the sector with our projects and R&D studies in this regard and to move our country to a green future.

The energy sector accounts for the largest share of carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Therefore, the energy transition is at the center of the fight against climate change. The aim of the energy transition is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Humanity is working hard to get rid of fossil fuels and transform the energy obtained from renewable sources into uninterrupted energy. The key here is energy storage. When it comes to storage, the first thing that comes to people’s mind is the battery. But there is another possibility, that is hydrogen. Renewable energy can be converted into hydrogen and stored so that it can be used when needed with minimal loss. In addition, while batteries can only store energy in the form of electricity and for a certain period of time, hydrogen can be converted into electricity or used as is.

Energy or not, what role does hydrogen play in the future of the world?

The world is facing increasing energy demand and environmental challenges. The limited supply of fossil fuels and their impact on the environment has accelerated the current search for sustainable energy. In this case, hydrogen promises an important solution. We therefore expect hydrogen to play an important role in the energy sector and beyond in the future.

Why and how does hydrogen provide a solution?

Hydrogen is key to clean energy generation and storage. Hydrogen, which is obtained by electrolysis for renewable energy and we call “green hydrogen”, offers the opportunity to use energy that respects the environment and does not emit carbon. In this context, the potential of hydrogen seems to have a transformative effect not only in the energy sector, but also in industry, transportation and many other areas.

How?

When demand increases, electricity can be obtained from renewable sources intermittently. To meet the uninterrupted electricity demand from renewable sources, the need for electricity storage will increase. On the other hand, hydrogen is a more suitable alternative to long-term energy storage since it is not lost during storage.

How is it different from storage on battery?

True, but if the time needed for storage and grid balancing is longer than one day, the batteries will be insufficient to meet the need. Therefore, the most important player in renewable energy storage will be green hydrogen. Regardless of the maturity, we will see that the contribution of green hydrogen to renewable energy storage in storage processes will be very high.

What is the effect of direct hydrogen consumption?

There is a potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels through the use of hydrogen in the transportation sector and in transportation vehicles. Hydrogen has advantages over battery technology, especially in long-distance transportation where charging time is important.

Its role in production is also important

Although hydrogen is already widely used as a catalyst in industries such as steel, fertilizers and petrochemicals, it can also act as a catalyst. The use of green hydrogen in these sectors is a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods. In the near future, we will see these industries provide the hydrogen they need for the green transition through decarbonization or low-carbon hydrogen production methods. The need for this transformation will increase the demand for green hydrogen in our country, especially for our industrial exporters and international operators, in order to be more competitive on the global stage .

Does hydrogen offer opportunities in Turkey?

Türkiye has a great hydrogen potential. These potential and opportunities are:

  • Turkey’s renewable energy potential,
  • Geographical location and logistics advantages,
  • Hydrogen production capacity and export opportunities,
  • Having large industrial hydrogen usage areas, especially in exporting sectors such as iron-steel, glass, ceramics and fertilizer.
  • Hydrogen enables more use of renewable resources

How will hydrogen contribute to carbon reduction targets?

Green hydrogen production is an environmentally friendly method. While conventional hydrogen production methods release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal, in green hydrogen production these gases are not released during production.

How is Turkey in the research, development and production of hydrogen technology and equipment?

Turkey has opportunities to develop and manufacture hydrogen technologies and equipment, such as research, development and innovation, equipment manufacturing and infrastructure, export potential, and government support and incentives. While all these factors create opportunities for Turkey to develop/produce hydrogen technologies and equipment, Turkey can become an important player in the hydrogen economy by focusing on the production process and technology development in cooperation with its vision and industry stakeholders.

Does the hydrogen business need special legislation?

Although important steps have been taken under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and development agencies, special legislative provisions and the guidance of institutions / organizations are needed to ensure development in the field of hydrogen. While legislation compatible with the hydrogen economy is essential, coordination, monitoring, incentives, financial support and certification are also important. In short, it is very important to establish a special legislative system and an institution or organization to coordinate activities related to hydrogen energy to ensure the development of hydrogen energy. These rules and institutions are necessary to ensure the safety, sustainability and compatibility of hydrogen technologies, encourage domestic production, support cooperation and accelerate the development of this industry. In addition, the renewable energy production zone and the specialized green hydrogen production zone for the purpose of green hydrogen production will pave the way for investment and production in this sector.

HYDROGEN OPPORTUNITIES IN TURKEY

Renewable energy potential: Turkey is a rich country in terms of various renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectric and geothermal energy. These resources provide a clean and sustainable source of energy for hydrogen production. Solar energy can be used to produce hydrogen, especially in regions with high average annual sunshine hours. Turkey is the second country in Eastern Europe, after Poland, with the capacity to produce green hydrogen. Geographical and logistical advantages: Transporting hydrogen is a challenge. Turkey’s strategic location between Europe, Asia and the Middle East has the potential to play an important role as a transit country for hydrogen transport and distribution.

Hydrogen capacity and export opportunities : It is estimated that Turkey has a green hydrogen production potential of 1.5 to 3 million tons. It is estimated that the European Union will need a total of 20 million tons of green hydrogen in 2030, half of which will be supplied by non-EU countries. Therefore, the development and promotion of electrolysis technology for hydrogen production using renewable energy is a potential opportunity for Turkey.

Industrial applications: Turkey has the opportunity to use hydrogen in various industries. For example, the use of hydrogen in steel, fertilizer, ceramics and glass production, sustainable production and reduction of low carbon emissions can provide great benefits to these sectors, where Turkey is an exporter.

Contribution to energy bills: Green hydrogen enables the reuse of renewable energy, creates added value and helps close the gap in energy bills.
